LEXICONDesign and market

Collectible design

Also called: Design art, functional art, collectable design

Furniture and objects produced as unique pieces or in very limited editions, sold through galleries and design fairs rather than retailers, and traded afterwards with reference to maker and provenance.

What defines the category

Four features, none of which is price: a limited or unique edition with a stated number; consistent attribution to a named designer or studio; documentation identifying the specific object; and distribution through a gallery or fair rather than retail. Expensive furniture from a large brand can be beautifully made and still fall outside the category, because it is produced continuously and resold as a used good rather than as a work.

Where it is traded

The category consolidated in the early 2000s around Design Miami, founded in 2005, and PAD in London and Paris. Phillips, Wright, Sotheby's and Christie's all run design sales, and their results are the nearest thing to public price data. That market is real but narrow, concentrated on established names, and considerably less liquid than the market for art — which is why buying on the expectation of financial return is the wrong reason to buy here.
