Upcycling
Reusing a material or component in a new application of equal or higher value, without breaking it down to raw material first — the distinction that separates it from recycling.
Four words that are not synonyms
Recycling destroys the object to recover the material: steel is melted and re-rolled, and the history goes with the heat. Reclaimed means recovered for reuse in broadly the same role. Salvaged means recovered from something being demolished or scrapped. Upcycled means reused in a new role of higher value. A machine component that becomes a table is salvaged and upcycled; it is specifically not recycled, because the object was never unmade.
Why the distinction has consequences
Melting and re-rolling steel is energy-intensive; reusing a formed component avoids that entirely, and it also preserves properties that cannot be recovered from a melt — the hardness of quenched wear plate, the case on a hardened pin, the geometry an engineer resolved. It preserves the wear record too, which is the part that cannot be manufactured. The trade-off is that supply is fixed by what is retired, not by what is wanted.
