Upcycled, reclaimed, salvaged, recycled: what the words mean

01Recycled

Recycled means the material was broken down and reformed. Steel is melted, glass is crushed and remelted, plastic is pelletised. The atoms survive; the object does not, and neither does any trace of its history. Recycled content is an environmental claim about a supply chain, not a statement about the piece in front of you. A table made from recycled steel is a new table, and it will look like one.

02Reclaimed

Reclaimed means the material was recovered intact from a previous use and put to work again as itself. A reclaimed beam is still a beam; a reclaimed machine part is still that part. Nothing was melted or remade, so the marks of the first life remain and can be documented. This is the only one of the four words that implies the object has a verifiable history, which is why it carries weight in collectible design and why it should come with paperwork.

Recycling destroys the object to save the material. Reclaiming saves the object.

03Salvaged

Salvaged describes how the material was obtained — rescued from demolition, a wreck, a scrapyard or a decommissioning — and says nothing about what happens next. Salvaged material may be reclaimed, recycled or simply resold. The word describes a moment of recovery, not a process or a standard. Treat it as a sourcing note rather than a quality claim.

04Upcycled

Upcycled means the material was reused with an increase in value or quality, without industrial reprocessing. It is the loosest of the four and the easiest to claim, because “increase in value” has no test. In practice it covers everything from serious work to a pallet with legs screwed on. When the word appears alone, ask the two questions it does not answer: what was the material before, and what was actually done to it.

05Which one applies here, and why it matters

Every object in this collection is **reclaimed**: a single authenticated component recovered intact, stabilised and finished as itself, with its origin and pre-transformation condition recorded on a certificate. Nothing is melted, nothing is reprocessed, nothing is aged to look old. The distinction is not pedantry — it is what a second owner will be able to verify in twenty years, and it is the difference between an object with provenance and an object with a story attached at the point of sale.
