Ripper shank

Also called: Ripper tine, ripper leg

A heavy curved steel blade mounted behind a dozer or on an excavator arm, used to fracture rock, frozen ground or compacted material that a bucket cannot penetrate directly.

What it does

Ripping breaks ground by driving a single point deep and then dragging it, using the machine's full tractive effort through one narrow shank. The curve is not decorative: it sets the attack angle and lifts material as the machine advances, so the shank works in bending along its whole length. A replaceable point at the tip takes the abrasion. Single-shank rippers are used for the hardest work, since concentrating the machine's power in one tine gives greater penetration than spreading it across three.

Why it becomes an object

The shank is one of the most heavily stressed components on any earth-moving machine, and its shape is entirely determined by that: thick at the root where bending moment peaks, tapering toward the tip, with the section following the load. Retirement usually follows a crack at the mounting or accumulated abrasion at the leading edge. What survives is a long, resolved, asymmetric curve — a form that reads as drawn rather than engineered, which is why a pair of them makes a convincing structure.
