Boom section

Also called: Boom, main boom, monoboom

The first and largest arm of an excavator, a fabricated steel box that carries every load from the bucket back to the machine and takes bending, torsion and shock along its whole length.

What it does

A boom is a welded box section — plate top, bottom and sides, with internal diaphragms where stress concentrates — pinned to the upper structure at one end and to the dipper arm at the other, with the boom cylinders acting between. It is one of the most highly engineered parts of the machine because everything the bucket does passes through it, including impacts nobody designed for. Cross-section varies along the length, deepest where the bending moment is greatest rather than uniform end to end.

Why it becomes an object

A boom shows its engineering openly: you can read where the plate thickens, where the diaphragms sit from the weld lines on the outside, where lifting eyes and hose brackets were added. It is retired for fatigue cracking at the pin bosses or the cylinder mounts, and a section cut clear of the damage is sound structural steel with a full history. The scale is the difficulty — a usable section is long and heavy enough that access to the room has to be established before anything is built.
